WHAT'S NIKAH

Nikah is an Arabic term that refers to the Islamic marriage contract. It is a sacred and legal agreement between a man and a woman who wish to enter into a marital relationship in accordance with Islamic teachings. Nikah is an important religious and social institution in Islam and is considered a significant milestone in the lives of Muslims.

During the nikah ceremony, both the bride and groom, or their representatives, along with witnesses and an Islamic officiant, come together to solemnize the marriage. The ceremony typically involves recitation of Quranic verses, prayers, and the exchange of vows and consent from both parties to enter into the marriage. The groom usually pays a marriage gift, known as the mahr, to the bride as a symbol of his commitment and financial responsibility.

Nikah serves as the foundation for a halal (lawful) relationship between a husband and wife, based on love, mutual respect, and the fulfillment of rights and responsibilities as outlined in Islamic teachings. It establishes the rights and obligations of both spouses, including matters such as dowry, maintenance, and the welfare of children.

In many Muslim-majority countries, the nikah contract has legal recognition and is registered with the appropriate civil authorities. It is important to note that the specific customs and practices surrounding nikah may vary across different cultures and regions within the Muslim community.

Overall, nikah represents the solemnization of marriage according to Islamic principles and holds great significance for Muslims who seek to establish a committed and lawful union based on their faith.
