How to Become IAS OFFICER


 Becoming an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer is a highly competitive and prestigious career path in India. The IAS is one of the most sought-after civil service positions in the country, and it involves working as a top-level administrator for the government.

Here are the general steps to become an IAS officer:

  1. Eligibility Criteria: Ensure you meet the eligibility criteria set by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), which conducts the Civil Services Examination (CSE) for IAS and other civil services.

  2. Educational Qualifications: You must hold a bachelor's degree from a recognized university. Any discipline is acceptable.

  3. Age Limit: The age limit for general category candidates is usually between 21 and 32 years. There are age relaxations for candidates from reserved categories and other specified groups.

    1. Civil Services Examination (CSE): The UPSC conducts the Civil Services Examination in three stages:

      a. Preliminary Examination: This is an objective-type test consisting of two papers: General Studies (GS) and Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). It is used to shortlist candidates for the Main Examination.

      b. Main Examination: This is a written examination that comprises nine papers, including an essay, four General Studies papers, two optional subjects (you have to choose one), and two language papers (one of them being English and the other a regional Indian language).

      c. Personality Test (Interview): Candidates who qualify the Main Examination are called for the Personality Test, commonly known as the interview.

    2. Choose Optional Subject: In the Main Examination, you have to select one optional subject from a list provided by the UPSC. Choose a subject you are comfortable with and have a good understanding of.

    3. Preparation: Preparing for the IAS exam requires dedication, consistency, and hard work. There are numerous coaching institutes and study materials available to help candidates with their preparation. Time management and practice are essential for success.

    4. Interview Preparation: The interview stage is crucial. Be well-informed about current affairs

      1. national and international issues, and have a clear understanding of your optional subject. Also, work on your communication and presentation skills.

      2. Medical Examination: After clearing the interview, candidates have to undergo a medical examination to ensure they are medically fit for the service.

      3. Final Merit List: The final merit list is prepared based on the candidate's performance in the Main Examination and the interview.

      4. Training: Candidates who make it to the final selection are trained at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie and other state and district-level training institutes.

      Remember that becoming an IAS officer requires a lot of perseverance and dedication. Many aspirants take multiple attempts to clear the examination, so do not get discouraged if you don't succeed on your first attempt.
